Tapestry-style purses had a moment in the early 1960s. Why? Mary Poppins, of
course! The film was released in 1964 and highly-textured bags with Edwardian
style soon hit the market. This one is by Garay, and has the romance of an old
school carpet bag combined with the practicality of MCM design. Win!
Here we present a touch-able handbag with a body like grandma's crewel work, a
classic floral rendering in low-key earth tones. It is framed, top and bottom,
by bone-colored vinyl. There is a single top handle, also vinyl, and various
bits of brass at the sturdy clasp, the four pointy feet, the handle rings and,
of course, the frame. The inside is lined with shiny black fabric stamped with
the "Garay" cursive logo in gold. There is an inside compartment with a brass
zipper.
This bag is relatively large for its age, and is quite deep, measuring 10
inches from the top frame to the bottom. The opening is only 9 inches across,
but the bag opens wide so there's good access to all the space it offers. And
if you're someone who enjoys a good dive bar with sticky surfaces, you'll be
glad to know that the vinyl surround at the base wipes clean with a little soap
and water.
Condition is generally excellent, with tiny signs of wear here and there (we
dare you to find them).
